On Friday, July 18, 2025, Indian equity markets ended the day lower. The BSE Sensex closed at 81,757.73, down 501.51 points, or 0.61%, while the benchmark NSE Nifty50 dropped 143.05 points, or 0.57%, to 24,968.40.
Market Breadth & Sectoral Performance
All of the major sectoral indices, with the exception of Media and Metal, ended the day lower. Telecom, FMCG, Capital Goods, Pharma, Private Banking, PSU Banks, and Consumer Durables all saw declines of 0.5–1%. With 1,619 gainers, 2,265 losers, and 153 unchanged, the market’s breadth remained skewed to the downside.
Global Cues & Currency
Due to consistent foreign outflows and stable crude prices, the rupee declined, closing at ₹86.15 against the dollar, down 8 paise from Thursday’s ₹86.07. European markets opened lower due to new worries about trade tensions, while Asian peers were mixed after US indices hit new highs on solid economic data.
Leading Movers
With 1–3% declines, Axis Bank, Shriram Finance, Bharat Electronics, HDFC Life, and Bharti Airtel were the biggest laggards on the Nifty50. On the other hand, Wipro, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, ONGC, and Nestle India were in the lead, with Tata Steel rising about 1.5% due to strong Q1 trends.
Technical Prospects
Key Support Break
Additional downside risk is indicated by the intraday close below the psychological 25,000 level, which is a bearish breakout—a conviction trade below a long-standing support area.
High-Probability Configuration
A short (sell) bias is maintained at a breakdown of 25,000. With a stop-loss just above 25,050 (the former support, now resistance), traders can try to sell. Near intraday lows of 24,900 is the next reasonable target.
Speculative Prospects
When today’s trading range falls entirely inside yesterday’s high-low, you’ll have an inside bar formation. Range-bound moves that oscillate between support and resistance are often the result of an inside bar. A speculative long might use tight stops to manage risk if either develops and trades in the 24,950–25,000 range.
Definitions
Breakout: When the price moves convincingly outside of a designated area of support or resistance.
Price levels that are likely to generate interest in buying or selling are known as support/resistance.
Inside Bar: A candlestick whose entire high-low range falls inside the range of the bar that came before it.
